Totowa, a borough with a land area of 4.08 square miles, was officially incorporated on March 15th, 1898, under Chapter 56 by the New Jersey Legislature. It emerged from sections of Wayne Township, replacing the defunct Manchester Township. The community’s borders touch Haledon, Little Falls, Paterson, Wayne, and Woodland Park. The name “Totowa” derives from a Native American term for the Great Falls of the Passaic River, meaning “sinking or falling water” or “between mountains and water.”
